Residents of Torrance, California have had enough of the constant aircraft noise. Chuck Costello, a leader of the Coalition for Torrance Airport Reform (COTAR), knows that residents have a right to enjoy peace and quiet at home. While flight schools like Sling Pilot Academy have expanded during coronavirus, the flight volume has almost doubled – and residents are taking the brunt of the noise.
In October, the Torrance City Council voted to ban “touch and go” exercises to address the noise concern. After this decision was challenged by the school, the council voted to cap the number of flight schools at six – with Sling Pilot Academy being the seventh.
But the Coronavirus Pandemic has caused a significant pilot shortage, and many companies are offering higher compensation packages. Sling Pilot Academy has attempted to help alleviate noise issues by vacating a specific region and launching Fly Friendly LA, a group of aircraft operators and flight schools committed to flying quieter.
The Torrance City Council is now considering another ban on touch and go exercises, while Sling Pilot Academy is waiting for an early 2024 hearing on a preliminary injunction.
